Alfred Dowe Resigns - Embezzelment Charges Have To Be Pending

Embezzlement is taking money that isn't yours. Simple as that.
Roanoke City Councilman Alfred Dowe resigned today from Roanoke City Council under the cloud of implications he asked for money he wasn't entitled to receive. And yes, he billed the City and State for personal items. Basically he stole from the citizens of Roanoke.
I am incredibly disappointed today that from the meager number of people who would possibly want to represent our community we elected someone who obviously holds our interests in contempt. There had to be a moment when Mr. Alfred Dowe knew he was billing the exact same expense to two different government agencies or a perhaps a slight hint of guilt when he charged a personal meal to the taxpayers of Roanoke. I have no doubt he knew exactly what he was doing, he knew that it was wrong, and yet he still broke the law and disrespected his community.
His actions go much farther than a single man abusing the system for his own profit and subsequent humiliation. I believe he represents an attitude that Roanoke City Council has manifested from it's own arrogance.
I am disgusted but I shouldn't be surprised. When you beat the City with a Stick to find hard working honest residents who want the job of City Council Member very few even poke their heads above the bushes. Mr. Dowe is obviously not qualified.
The Roanoke Times quotes Vice Mayor David Trinkle saying, "Alfred is a very dedicated council member. ... This is an unfortunate error in judgment."
An unfortunate error in judgment is getting a tattoo at 3am.
Stealing, taking, or using money that is not yours over a long period of time on numerous occasions is called being a criminal. In my eyes, if found guilty, Disgraced Former Roanoke City Council Member Alfred Dowe deserves incarceration.
His actions are unjustifiable.

I was a not just a classmate but at one time the best friend of Alfred Dowe many years ago, altough I am not taking up or trying to soften his actions I have yet to see what the money was spent on. Just that it was spent. Have other elected officials been audited or investigated for thier spendings?

"Dowe's spending accounted for almost half of the total for all seven council members, which was $34,570.67 last year, according to statements of economic interest filed with the city clerk's office.

Put another way, Dowe spent more on meals and travel than did all of his counterparts on the Roanoke County Board of Supervisors and the Salem City Council combined." From The Roanoke Times

I think that answers the question.

According to The Times he double billed the City & State and he bought way too many meals using the City Credit Card.

This page has everything you need to know about Mr. Dowe's situation.
